Tom Walsh

Northcote Mayor (1946-47, 1951-52)

Tom Walsh served two terms as Mayor of Northcote, 1946-47 and 1951-52.

As a Councillor, Walsh had been, for 8 years, Chairman of the A.L.P. Council caucus. In 1955, along with Gerald O'Leary, he supported the newly created D.L.P (Democratic Labor Party). This split with the A.L.P. caused many long-held associations and friendship to be destroyed. Walsh and O'Leary were due for re-election in the 1955 Council election, and they had to stand against endorsed A.L.P. candidates - they were both soundly defeated.
