Norman Osborne

(1894-1980)

Collingwood born Norman Stanley Osborne served with distinction in both World Wars, achieving the rank of Major in the Southern Command add Headquarters, Victorian Lines of Communications.  He married Clarice Ivy Hatty when he returned from the first war in 1919 and the couple moved to Scotia Street in Preston where Norman settled back into his civilian life working as a clerk.

For 41 years Osborne worked for the Preston Council including twenty-four as the Chief Clerk of the Electrical Engineers’ Department. Osborne played an active role in the Returned Services League, holding the position of President of the Preston branch in 1924 and 1929, senior Vice President of the Victorian branch and acting Federal President in 1937.

Osborne received the O.B.E,. in the Queen's Birthday Honours of 1956 for his contributions to the community, in particular war veterans through the Returned Soldiers League of Australia's Victorian Branch. At the end of his life he and Ivy lived in Gower Street, Preston.
